Social Networking Sites – How much do you do?

This morning I got a few email notifications from some social networking sites that I rarely use.  This got me thinking about how many different online communities I have an account with that I rarely use.

For me, my online social life falls into four different categories: sites I check every day (facebook, twitter, wordpress), sites I check once a week or less (linked in, YS network, skype), sites I have accounts at but never use (klout, youtube, vimeo, flickr), and sites I have never used (google +, pinterest, Instagram).

I am curious, where do you fall on this spectrum?

Now that you have voted, I am curious why you answered the way you did.  For me, I focus on the few that I have the most interaction with, and basically ignore the others simply because I just don’t have time for them all.  Why do you use all of them?  Why do you only use a few?

  1. I think I have an account on pretty much any network out there…but I only am really active on Facebook and Twitter and occasionally check the others. I’m getting more active on LinkedIn now that I’ve found youth ministry groups.

  2. I have accounts on most networks out there. I am very active on Twitter and Facebook and occasionally checked the others. (like maybe once a week) I’m starting to use LinkedIn more often now that I’ve found some youth ministry groups.

    • I am on linkedin but am not active, I just don’t really get it though… It really makes a big difference if you find some good connections and conversations, that is what keeps you going back for sure. What youth ministry groups are you a part of?

  3. I’m on a lot of them except for linked in, don’t know why but I refuse to use that one haha. Instagram has become my favorite.

  4. I’m like you Brian. The only difference is I use Google+. I like it a lot more than facebook, but most of the people I interact with are Facebook, so I’m stuck.

    • That is actually how I got on twitter in the first place, all the YM people I wanted to connect with were on it…so I got sucked into it. But isn’t that the point of it all anyway though-interaction with others.

      • I use to be anti-twitter, but like you, I noticed more and more YM were using it, so I decided it was time to get one. Twitter is also good to have if you’re trying to promote your blog. Michael Hyatt’s book “Platform” dedicates an entire section to the importance of twitter and how to use it.

I only use facebook daily, but my kids have accounts on instagram and tumblr and skype, so I feel sort of compelled to join up to keep tabs on them. Our church youth ministry uses facebook and email. I have a twitter account but I refuse to do anything with it. I have inactive accounts on linked in, pinterest and my space. I think about getting out of the whole social media shebang frequently.
